Our Post is named after ANTHONY L. ONETO
Anthony L. Oneto entered on duty as a Patrol Inspector, U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service on October 24, 1940. He was granted a Military Furlough on July 1, 1942 and served honorably in the United States Coast Guard as the Commander of the USS Cavalier in the South Pacific. The ship was torpedoed in Luzon Philippine Islands and he was decorated with the Silver Star. At the end of hostilities of World War II, Tony returned to duty as a Patrol Inspector, stationed at Brawley, California. On the night of March 11, 1947 Inspector Anthony L. Oneto met his death at the hands of a smuggler whom he and his partner were apprehending in the act of smuggling aliens into the United States. On March 11, 1947, while conducting routine traffic checks near Indio, California, Patrol Inspectors Anthony L. Oneto and John L. Fouquette arrested Carlos Ochoa Romero in the act of hauling four smuggled aliens. The aliens were placed in the back seat of the government car and Ochoa was instructed to drive his car to the Border Patrol Office. After a short time, Ochoa stopped his car which was being followed by the government car, walked back, said something about his car stalling, pulled a .32 caliber pistol from his pocket, and began firing at the officers. Inspector Oneto was struck four times in the head and died instantly. Patrol Inspector Fouquette was wounded but returned the fire, wounding Ochoa who escaped in the darkness. In spite of this activity, Inspector Fouquette was able to retain custody of the smuggled aliens until help arrived.

Commander’s Corner June 2010
The Phoenix Club on a Friday night June 11th, we had a very good time. As always the Phoenix Club did us very well. I know having a meeting on a Friday is not how we have done things, but due to the economy restaurants have to trim where they can. It was a good turnout though and this was an important meeting. We had the second round of nominations for Post Officers and voted in a new cadre of officers of the 2010-2011 year. This will be my last Commander’s Corner. Comrade Dave Dolce wanted to step up the Commander’s office. I would like to congratulate and wish all of the new officers the very best. Your positions will be rewarding and I know you all will do well. I also would like to request that all members give the incoming Post Officers your support, they have important jobs to do and will have much work and responsibilities.I would like to take some time to say thank you to the other officers who have been a big help during my tenure as your Commander. Without them our Post would have been difficult to run. They are the best of comrades and friends. Thank you so much for your support. The initiation of our new officers will be on Saturday, July 31st, 2010 at the Cypress American Legion Post, 5646 Corporate Ave, Cypress, CA 90630 (714) 821-0910. The social hour will start at 5 pm and the meeting will commence around 6 pm. Member’s families and guests are also welcome, please attend as this is always an important event and you can show your support for the incoming cadre of Post officers. So your soon to be Past Commander says thank you and the very best to our new officers.
