Our Post is named after

ANTHONY L. ONETO

Anthony L. Oneto entered on duty as a Patrol Inspector, U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service on October 24, 1940.

He was granted a Military Furlough on July 1, 1942 and served honorably in the United States Coast Guard as the Commander of the USS Cavalier in the South Pacific.  The ship was torpedoed in Luzon Philippine Islands and he was decorated with the Silver Star.

At the end of hostilities of World War II, Tony returned to duty as a Patrol Inspector, stationed at Brawley, California.  On the night of March 11, 1947 Inspector Anthony L. Oneto met his death at the hands of a smuggler whom he and his partner were apprehending in the act of smuggling aliens into the United States.

On March 11, 1947, while conducting routine traffic checks near Indio, California, Patrol Inspectors Anthony L. Oneto and John L. Fouquette arrested Carlos Ochoa Romero in the act of hauling four smuggled aliens. The aliens were placed in the back seat of the government car and Ochoa was instructed to drive his car to the Border Patrol Office. After a short time, Ochoa stopped his car which was being followed by the government car, walked back, said something about his car stalling, pulled a .32 caliber pistol from his pocket, and began firing at the officers. Inspector Oneto was struck four times in the head and died instantly. Patrol Inspector Fouquette was wounded but returned the fire, wounding Ochoa who escaped in the darkness. In spite of this activity, Inspector Fouquette was able to retain custody of the smuggled aliens until help arrived.

Passing of Charles F. Biefeldt (Chuck)

Chuck was born on December 21st, 1937 in Binghamton, New York.  At that time it was tough growing up, in the middle of the great depression, the start of World War II, and all the anxiety of time made it tough on a young man.  Chuck stuck with it and the times helped to shape his character as a person.  Chuck is known as a hard worker, someone who would persevere and get the job done and his young experiences served him well.

In August of 1956 Chuck joined the United States Marine Corps.  He served four years and was honorably discharged in 1960.  In May of 1961 Chuck joined the United States Navy.  After sea school Chuck went into the Submarine Service and was again honorably discharged in May of 1963.

In 1975 Chuck Entered on Duty with the U.S. Border Patrol at El Centro, California.  Chuck attended academy class 107 from 4/8/75 to 7/31/75.  In 1977 he Reported for Duty at the Los Angeles District Investigations Office where he stayed for the remainder of his career, Chuck worked in every division of the Investigations Branch.  In the late 70’s Chuck married another Investigator, Marlene Amiot and they had a daughter, Stephanie.  Chuck was a doting father and ‘Steph’ was his girl.  We would talk about our kids and Chuck was always happy to talk about Steph, telling stories about her and being the proud dad.  Chuck is remembered as a guy who was ‘Of Good Cheer’, when things would get tense at work or we had to work extremely long hours, he would come up with some great humor that got his co-workers through the bad times.  He was promoted to a Supervisory Agent and he last served in the Organized Crime, H and Drug Enforcement Task Force.   Chuck retired from the I.N.S. in 1995.

After retirement Chuck did not lay back, no he obtained his California Private Investigators License and worked on cases with some pals from the I.N.S.  The Examinations Branch need to bring on help with their case loads, and Chuck returned to work at I.N.S. as a Retired Annuitant in Examinations.  He worked in the El Monte Field Office and in the downtown Los Angeles office.  He was not one to sit around.

Chuck passed away from us on May 20th, 2011, due to a sudden and grave illness.  While he was here, he made his family and friends better off, did the very best that was asked of him and always tried to be happy and bring cheer to others.  We will all miss Chuck.

Chuck’s service will be June 3rd at Riverside National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Staging Area #3

Amendment to Change Post Constitution

There is a standing proposal to change the Post Constitution, the proposal deals with the number of Post members needed to have a quorum in order to conduct Post business.  This is a big change that was brought on by the fact that Post meetings have been arranged and not enough members have been present.  The change would reduce the number of members for a quorum from 10 to 7.

Post Fund Raising

At the May, non-meeting, two Comrades brought in donated items to be raffled off.  This may not seem like much, but it was fun and the Post was able to raise $ 40.00 plus.  Items raffled off: A Bottle of very good wine, a bottle of Tequila, and INS Officer Hat Badge, and a Poster.  We, the Post need to do more fund raising.  If you have some sought after goodies please think about donating them to the raffle, contact Bob Crebbs or the Commander.

A New Look for the Newsletter

Yes, I know that this is a big change for the newsletter.  I was asked to write the newsletter within the last couple of days, so I used a format that I have for another organization.  Had to do the best I could with what was on hand.  I hope you like it.  Also, if I continue on as the Editor, I encourage all Post Comrades to submit articles, cartoons, information, criticism of the newsletter, items of interest and PHOTOS.  I would like to have some historical Post photos.  Mike
