List of Immigration Classifications
If you can memorize these, you will have a
jump start on your academy immigration law.
A1: Ambassadors, Public Ministers, Heads of State (Queen Elizabeth, Tony
Blair and the like
A2: Other Government Officials (on official business)
A3: Employees of A1 & 2. Such as housekeeper, etc...
B1: Visitor for business
B2: Visitor for personal (Vacation, school placement exams, etc...)
C1: Transit through US
C2: Transit directly to the United Nations HQ (in NYC)
C3: Foreign diplomat and party in transit through US to official posting outside
US (Example: Ambassador of Ireland assigned to Peru transiting through Miami on
the way to Peru)
TWOV (sometimes known as C4: No longer used. previously in transit without a
visa. (Blue I-94)
D1: Crewmember departing on same vessel/airline
D2: Crewmember departing on different vessel/airline
E1: Treaty Trader, and party
E2: Treaty Investor, and party
F1: Student (academic)
F2: Student's dependent (spouse/child)
G1: Principal RESIDENT representative of foreign member Gov't to
International Organization (Ambassador of Honduras to the United Nations)
G2: Temporary Representative of foreign government to International
Organization. (Example a government official attending a conference at the World
Health Organization)
G3: Rep. of non-recognized/non-member gov't to an international organization (an
example escapes me at the moment)
G4: Employee of of an international organization (Secretary to Kofi Annan, UN
Secretary General)
G5: Domestic Staff of G1-G4, employees of G1-4
H1A: Nurses (don't believe any of these are still seen)
H1B: Specialty Occupations- Computer Programmers, Models. I've seen a waiter
with an H1B, if you can believe it.
H2A: Temp. Agricultural Worker
H2B: Temp Skilled Worker
H3: Trainee
H4: Spouse/child of H1a-H3
I: Foreign media
J1: Exchange visitor (could be a student, a camp-counselor, etc...)
J2: Spouse/child of J1
K1: Fiancée of US Citizen
K2: child of K1
K3: Spouse of US Citizen (awaiting Adjustment, semi-complicated)
K4: Child of K3
L1: Intra-company Transferee (Manager for BMW assigned to US office)
L2: Spouse/child of L1
M1: Student (Vocational- pilot student, I think Mohammed Atta had an M1 at
some point.
M2: Spouse/child of M1
M3: Canadian/Mexican commuter student (I've never seen one)
N-8: Parent of SK-3 or SN-3 (Never seen one)
N9: Child of N-8 or SK-1, SK-2, SK-4, SN-1, SN-2, SN-4 (Never seen one)
NATO-1: Principal Perm. Rep of member state to NATO
NATO-2: Other Rep. of member state to NATO
NATO-3: Office/staff accompanying above
NATO-4: Official of NATO (doesn't fit above)
NATO-5: Expert, but not an official of NATO that would fit under NATO4
NATO-6: Member of Civilian Force component, blah, blah, blah, (long explanation
in CFR)
NATO-7: Personal Employee/domestic staff of NATO1-6
All NATO include immediate family in the individual class, for example, a
NATO2's wife and kid is a NATO2
O1: Alien with extraordinary ability (Sting, Ozzy Osbourne, Einstein could've
qualified too)
O2: Accompanying O1 (Manager for Sting, etc...)
03: Spouse/child of O1 or O2
P1: Internationally recognized athlete or member of internationally
recognized entertainment group
P2: Artist or Entertainer in an exchange program
P3: Artist/Entertainer in culturally unique program (Japanese Kabuki)
P4: Spouse/child of P1-3
Q1: Participant in International Cultural Exchange Program, aka: Disney Visa.
(If you've been to EPCOT Center in Disney, you've met these people in the
countries). Also used by other than Disney
Q2: Irish Peace Process Program Participant (also known as Morrison Visa)
Q3: Spouse child of Q2
R1: Alien in Religious Occupation (Priest, Rabbi, Imam, etc...)
R2: Spouse/child of R1
S5: Informant (Snitch) Criminal Organization
S5: Informant (Snitch) Terrorist Organization
Both S are VERY rare
T1: Victim of Human Trafficking
T2: Spouse of T1
T3: Child of T1
T4: Parent of T1
TN: NAFTA professional
TD: Spouse/child of TN
U1: Victim of criminal activity (never seen one)
U2: Spouse of U1 (also an Irish Rock band :)
U3: Child of U1
U4: Parent of U1
V1: Spouse of LPR (awaiting adjustment of status) (LPR=lawfully admitted for
permanent residence)
V2: child of LPR (see above)
V3: Child of V1 or V2
WB: Visa Waiver visitor for business
Wt: Visa Waiver visitor for personal/pleasure
