Drop of the Hat Club (DHC) What is it? The Drop of the Hat Club is a strictly unofficial way for you to communicate your desire to the people in the Border Patrol Hiring Unit that you wish to be considered for short notice assignments. This means that if another applicant is not available to fill a seat in a Border Patrol Academy class, that position could be offered to you, if you meet the requirements and the station location is acceptable to you. How do I qualify? You must have completed all phases of the hiring process, including your background investigation, physical and drug tests. You should have been told that you are in training and that you are just waiting to be called or you should have a sixty day letter in hand (or showing in CASS). What about my geographical preferences? This may be a moot issue with the new policy, but this is the way it is at this time: You can indicate at the time of joining the Club whether you wish to accept an "anywhere" assignment, or if you wish to keep your current geographical preferences. In either case, you will officially keep your geographical preferences. The only difference is that the people who do the hiring will see that you are willing to take any station in order to get hired sooner. If you are not particular about where you are assigned, this is the quickest route to wearing the green. WARNING - If you are not serious about taking an ANYWHERE assignment, do not sign up for it. This works for the northern border or the southern border. You can make things a little easier on Mary if you put DHC NB or DHC SB in your email subject line. I want to go ASAP! You can indicate that you are willing to take less than a two week notice, as short as a seven day notice. If you can take a VERY short notice, so indicate in your sign up email. Normally, you'll get a ten day notice at a minimum, but it could be shorter. JB wants you to know that signing up for the DHC means "I am ready TODAY to jump in and to fill the gap where some other loser quit. "It does not mean "Call me ahead of my peers so I can cut in line without any personal risk unless it proves inconvenient for me to cut in line." I want to sign up! If this looks like something you want to do, send Ray an email (see link below) and give ONLY your last name, the last four of your SSN and your geo prefs (for the club, not your official ones.). Indicate if you wish normal short notice or if you are able to accept VERY short notice. This information is then transmitted to the Hiring Unit. Make sure you get a reply from me. If you didn't, you need to resend. Please use this format in your email: Name Last four of SSN Geo pref Amount of notice needed You do NOT need to add the words NAME, etc, as Mary is fairly bright and this ain't her first rodeo. I will accept your thanks in advance, so save the "thank you" email. I'm not being ungracious. It is that I get WAY too much email now. Don't feel that is necessary to personally express your gratitude. If you want to thank me, this is how you do it: Jack Daniels, 1.75 liter. Things you need to understand: While this is a benefit to you, the primary purpose of the Drop of the Hat Club is to provide the Hiring Unit with a pool of individuals who can take off for the academy at the drop of the hat, thus keeping academy classes as full as possible. Participation is voluntary and you can withdraw at any time. If you fail to accept an assignment based on your sign up, you will be dropped from the Club and go back into normal rotation in the place you would have been anyway. This is STRICTLY unofficial and has nothing whatsoever to do with the US government, the Border Patrol nor CBP nor DHS in any official capacity. Decisions made by the Hiring Unit, errors or omissions made by the staff of HonorFirst.com can not be appealed and by signing up for the Club, you accept all these conditions. |
