Is There a Former USBP Building in Mexico?

Return to the Main USBP History Page

Current Location of the Second El Paso Sub-district Headquarters/Station
For years, there have been persistent rumors suggesting that the Chamizal Treaty, which altered the US-Mexico border, resulted in a U.S. Border Patrol building now being situated in Mexico. This building was believed to be Camp Chigas, which once served as:

  • El Paso Sub-district headquarters and station (1924-1956)
  • El Paso Sub-district training facility (1930-1936)
  • U.S. Border Patrol National Academy (1936-1951, 1953, 1954, 1957)

However, recent investigations have determined the location of Camp Chigas with high accuracy. If the building were still standing today, it would be within the United States.

Further research has uncovered the location of the second El Paso Sub-district Headquarters/Station, which was reportedly completed in 1956. The 1957 El Paso Directory lists the address as 1401 S. Hammett Blvd.

Hammett) at the bottom of the photograph, the second El Paso Sub-district Headquarters from 1956 is visible. The station was located at 1400 S. Hammett, while the detention center was at 1401 S. Hammett.

The building in the red circle was the second location of the El Paso Sector headquarters. It is currently the location of the Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas.
In conclusion, the location of the building that once housed the second El Paso Sub-district Headquarters in 1956 has been identified. The structure still stands today and is located in Mexico, functioning as the Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas as seen in the photo above.
