March 17 - March 23This week in the history of the United States Border Patrol, we delve into significant historical developments and acts of heroism. A standout event is the signing of General Order 61 (GO 61) on March 18, 1926, a document crucial in shaping the structure and functions of the Border Patrol. This order not only established the organizational framework but also defined the roles and responsibilities within the USBP, forming the basis for its current operations. Highlighting the valor within the ranks, we acknowledge the anniversaries of several Newton-Azrak Award recipients. This prestigious award is given for acts of extraordinary bravery and dedication. Among those commemorated are Agent Floyd Southerland III for his courageous rescue in the Rio Grande in 1999, Senior Patrol Agent Theo D. Hudson for his innovative intelligence contributions in 1992, and the team of Agents Carnes, Smith, Cooke, and Hinojosa for their daring rescue in 1994. These agents exemplify the bravery and commitment that define the Border Patrol. While this week doesn't mark any line of duty deaths, it's a time to reflect on the ongoing commitment and sacrifices made by all USBP agents. Their dedication to safeguarding our borders and enforcing the law underscores the challenging yet vital role they play in national security and public safety. Enjoy and have a great week!
